Helge Nareid's homepage

I am trying to construct a personal website. That is not particularly original or clever, I know - but I'll try even so. These pages are likely to get intermittent updates as and when I find the time and inclination to add something. A lot of what is here at the moment has been recycled from an earlier website of mine, but I have added some new stuff as well.

Who is this guy?

Photograph by Edwin "Boots" Baker

The above photograph was taken in 1994, but I don't think I've changed that much since then (Ok, there may be some more gray in the beard ...). Contrary to what some people assume, I am male (Helge is a fairly common man's name in Norway). I am a Norwegian national, but I have been living in Aberdeen, Scotland since 1997. I have also lived in Japan for 2 years (1994 to 1996). I was born in 1955, which I suppose makes me "middle-aged". I am single, and I have no children.

Ye Goode Olde Days...

I have been active on internet since 1989 or thereabouts. Most of my contributions from the early years have gone to the eternal bit-bucket in the sky, but I was somewhat surprised to find that somebody had archived one of my earliest contributions, which was on that eternal issue of lutefisk, and can be found here.

Photography

Photography has been a hobby of mine for more than 30 years, and even though my activity has varied over the years, I have always been taking photographs since I first caught the bug in 1970. There was a time in my life when I considered making a career of it, and I have tried my hand at professional photography at times in the past. However, I decided that it was not for me, and it is a decision I have not regretted.

I aim to show some of my photography on this site. At the moment, the selection will be somewhat erratic, and will depend on what I have available in digital form. Obviously, the bulk of my earlier work has been recorded on film, and the negatives will have to be scanned before I can put them on my website. As of the moment, only a very small fraction of my film archive has been scanned, and since it is a tedious and time-consuming process, the collection of scanned images will only grow slowly. For the last couple of years, most of my photography has been digital, and I will make some more pages available soon.

The first little bit is from my time in Japan, and can be found here at this page.

Social Photography

Photography also has a social side which I have come to respect. Some of my social photographs can be found using the links below:

Aberdeen, Grampian and Northern Isles CAMRA

I am an active member of the local branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra). The branch web-page can be found here.

The branch arranges some social events. I brought a camera on a trip in May 2003, when we visited the Black Isle, Isle of Skye and Atlas Breweries in the North and West of Scotland. Some pictures from this trip.

The branch arranges a yearly beer festival in Aberdeen the first week-end of November each year.
Images from the 2004 festival can be found at Aberdeen & North East Beer Festival 2004..
Some some more images from the 2005 festival can be found at Aberdeen & North East Beer Festival 2005..

The branch Pub of the Year for 2005 is the Redgarth in Oldmeldrum. There are some pictures from the presentation of the diploma here.

rec.photo.marketplace.* reorganisation

For those of you who know what usenet is about - some years ago, I was the proponent for the rec.photo.marketplace.* reorganisation. I have placed a few relevant documents including the charters at http://www.hnareid.me.uk/
